Be Careful

As in many cities of the World, Santiago isn’t free of those places where is recommended to be careful because of the danger that presents. To be prepared is always the best way to go, so we made a compiled of the places where you should pay more attention:

In the centre is where the highest number of complaints for theft is made, because of the crowded streets, ideal situation for the thieves. Pay especial attention on Alameda, Santa Lucia and San Diego.
Although the Cerro San Cristobal is a very recommended place to visit, is proper do it during day time because in the night the risk of being robbed goes higher such as in Cerro Santa Lucia.
If you are on Plaza Italia, Parque O’Higgins or near Estadio Nacional during day light you shouldn’t be worried, but if day turns into night is better to be prudent.

Just left to say that the most important is to be careful and don’t let people fool you. No matter where you are going, prudence is always important ;)

In Santiago are well known the craft fairs and we can find them everywhere and different kinds of them.
The best known are the craft fair of Santa Lucia (Alameda con Carmen), Pueblito Los Dominicos (Avda. Apoquindo 9085) and Aldea de Vitacura (Av. Vitacura 6840)

If you want to bring home something typical Chilean, you can’t go without an “Indio Picaro” or to remember the field a poncho or chupalla.
Our country is well known for its wine strain too, so you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to buy a delicious Chilean wine.

Anyway, the most important thing you should remember to take home is a smile and a beautiful memory of our pretty city.

Bellavista: One of our favourite places

If you go to Santiago, you must visit the great variety of historic neighbourhoods in the capital. These, each with its own charm, have a variety of activities and iconic places to visit.

One of the most recommended is Barrio Bellavista (Recoleta), known for its active night life, marked by the bohemian essence that prevails on its buildings, walls, streets and that permeates daily life in the neighbourhood. If we spent a whole day walking and appreciating Bellavista we wouldn’t feel left down by it. Here are some tips of how to face this beautiful neighbourhood:

TRANSPORT:

Bellavista is a neighbourhood located at the centre of the capital, that’s why there are many ways to get there; however always it’s better to go by foot because of the crowded streets and the few amount of parking lots.
If we choose to walk, we’ve got the option to plan our trip on www.transantiagoinforma.cl according to our starting place. This will indicate us the best route to get to destiny using the public transport. If we are close of the subway, the best option would be go to Bellas Artes station.

ATTRACTIONS:

This historic neighbourhood isn’t just known for counting with a nightlife pretty damn good, but presents a fantastic cultural billboard available during the day. One of the most connoted is “La Chascona” (Fernando Márquez de la Plata 0192, Providencia) third house of the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, which has been converted into a museum open to public. It is a really recommended panorama because of the particularity of the construction, both distribution and the essence that Neruda gave to every room, inspired on the sea, the front of the house and its interior is decorated as if it was a boat. Whether or not fan of the national poet, visit “La Chascona” is always a good decision.

Another particular attraction is Cerro San Cristobal, which take place on the centre of Bellavista’s streets. You can use the teleferico to climb to the top and enjoy the view of the city, also visit the shrine to the Virgin. Besides that we found the Japanese Garden, and if you are looking for a family panorama you can enter to the metropolitan zoo from there.
In addition to its countless theaters which offer an interesting variety of presentations, such as Mori Theater, Montecarmelo, El Cachafaz and so many others, we can find Bellas Artes museum that counts with a great collection of permanent expositions of the artwork of several national and foreign artists.

FOOD:

Bellavista offers an interesting number of possibilities to enjoy of the different kinds of tastes. Its blocks are full of small restaurants which offer an interesting menu for less money, if you’re looking for a very specific type of cooking and you are willing to pay a little more, here are some recommendations:

“Como Agua para Chocolate”: Located on Constitución 088, this restaurant offers not just an exquisite meal but looks out for details on every level and gives a really pleasant evening. Kitchen specially dedicated to the Mediterranean and Mexican food.

“Galindo”: Typical Chilean restaurant located on Dardignac 098, huge variety of wines and national dishes, great to go on group to enjoy a typical Creole food.

Recommended: Try the Magellan lamb’s palette, you won’t regret it.

NIGHT LIFE:

Like we said above, this bohemian neighborhood it’s known for the quality of the pubs, discotheques, resto-bar that we can find past 21ºº hours.
If your desire is to know Bellavista at night a great place to start is Patio Bellavista, located on Constitución 30-70 counts in its interior with different types of restaurants and pubs for diverse tastes:

The history of Santiago dates back to the early habitants of the Maipo river’s basin, approximately in the 10th milennium b.C. However, only in the 15th century with the conquest of the region by the Inca Empire would exist the first communities in the area.
Santiago of the new extremadura would be founded by the spanish Pedro de Valdivia, the february 12th, 1541. Since that date, the first city founded in Chile would be in interruption.
At present, Santiago is a large conurbation, which, in the year 2002, stretched on a surface of 641,4 km2 and had a population 5.428.590 habitants, in the year 2006 would reached, according to estimates from the National Institute of Statistics, 6.269.629 habitants, which, is equivalent to about 40% of the total population of the country.
